Abel Mathis

Abel had gross motor delays that presented shortly after birth. He would meet gross motor milestones right at the tail end of what was considered normal, so his pediatrician kept waiting before referring him for additional testing. When he was 13 months old, I had him referred to First Steps for an evaluation and they discovered that he had hypotonia (low muscle tone). He started physical therapy and we were referred to Riley to a developmental pediatrician. They ordered a variety of testing to see what was causing the hypotonia and it came back that he had a chromosomal disorder (a duplication on the long arm of his 22nd chromosome). We were referred to a geneticist at Riley who told us that there is no other documentation of this duplication at this time. By this time, Abel was receiving PT, OT, and speech therapy from First Steps. Abel is thriving currently, but still attends four therapies a week at Pediatric Rehab in Muncie: PT, OT, speech, and feeding. He also wears orthotics and glasses, but does really well with them! He is a very bright and funny little boy who loves telling jokes!
